It's actually in both. The vamp is in 7/8 but the tune is in 12/8. That's how it's written in Russ Ferrante's score. (I don't know if you can still get it, I got it back in the early 90's when I was in music school.)

If you feel it out, you'll feel the groove in 6/8, or 12/8; however long you want the measure to be. 7/8...? Hmm..okay...if you think about it, you can somehow count it out in 7/8...but who wants to! LOL!! That's TOO much work for me...like...walking around the block, when you can cut through the backyard!

nebaioth- maybe the marimba part is in 7/8, but it's overlaid on the song's 6/8 rhythm? I've heard this song described as "rhythmically complex" by more than one person. . .

sconman5487- I'm a drummer and I got this ALBUM when it came out in '87 - I love Will and Jimmy's chemistry and I've been a fan ever since...even found some older stuff with Ricky on drums. - This whole song is in 6/8. There's not even a 7/8 MEASURE in the whole joint! You can even count it out in a slow 4/4(listen to the claps on the break). The rythmic melody that starts at the beginning of the song and DOES NOT STOP is probably what's throwing you off. Just listen to the drums!lol Peace&Love

great song! awesome cd! terrible video. interesting note: the song is written in a 12/8 shuffle with the marimba part in 7/8. try to count it. good luck!!!!!
