He was extremely lucky. The parachute was what saved him. If the car had gotten tangled in the chutes lines he would have died. The stunt itself was extremely stupid from an aerodynamic prespective. To cut through the air at that speed and attack angle you would need a needlepoint shaped vehicle, not the huge flat-fronted Lincoln. The little 'wings' installed on his car were crushed in microseconds under the tremendous loads placed on them.

They mentioned Knievel's abortive jump over the Snake River, and exactly the same thing happened here: a premature parachute deployment that brought both bike and car to a halt in mid-air.
