Young never really contributed to the harmonies. His voice is left of centre.
They needed him for the danger - he brings a sense of edge and rock n roll. They're better with him, but his contribution is never about harmony.

I saw them around 2000 at the Pond In Anaheim, with Young. It was kind of funny because Young was fully rocking out, and the others were mellow yellow. I was never that into csn, was Y, but they are a big piece of the 60/70's music puzzle and a great contributor

the anthem of the baby boomer generation. I saw them in concert a few years ago. Stephen Stills looked to be in poor health, but his harmonies were wonderful, and he still plays a great guitar.
