it's a mic in addition to the bridge pick ups and neck ups etc.. it's connected physically under the metal pieace (a.k.a the bridge). i think it picks up some vibrations etc...?

I see... and what are the disadvantages of having a piezo mic? I mean, why wouldn't I replace my elec guitar bridge mic for a piezo one?
