Digital image manipulation can also be used in a good way, though. If you ever hire a photographer for a wedding, party, school photo, etc. -- chances are you're going to have your teeth whitened, acne removed, eyes brightened, hair softened, etc.
These techniques are usually very subtle and leave a person looking realistically more natural, not artificial.
I think it all boils down that people want to remember that they looked better than they did, and there's nothing wrong with that.
