Depending on the lava flow and what you would like to do but in general I would say 10 meter is close enough for good shots and more or less save. Don't underestimate the heat radiation of a large lava flow!

Geology is very interesting field. Thanks for your very great comments here. I have known more great knowledge. Lava flow is my most favorite for this magnificent video. The marvelous compilation of imagery and music is so impressive as always. Perfect work,Thomas.Unfortunately I did not know what you said in German;-). Keep on great work Thomas..
