it's the story of a family but mostly of a child...
the pain he's singing about isn't so much his own as it is his empathy for his child, who had to experience the breaking up of his family at a tender age. really, it's a diatribe against the wife, but effectively he's giving voice to what he FEELS would be his son's thoughts and feelings on their seperation.
