thanks for the reply, i have AI cs2 and i solved the problem; looked on the internet and to get the "smooth" or "corner" options from the Join menu i have to go to Average and select "Both" first.but really thanks for the tut, i panicked cause it was just what i needed but that one step was keeping me behind. Great work

No, the only problem I had was that my computer is set up for multiple keyboard layouts and when I press ctrl+shift it switches layouts. At some point I pressed ctrl+shift, and so the letter 'j' on my keyboard actually meant something else, and i had to switch back to the normal keyboard layout. If you are using Illustrator CS2 and you use the the lasso tool to select two points (and they are on top of eachother) then when you go to Object > Path > Join that dialog pops up.
