yup that was a dumb move but i can tell you why he tried to pick him up. He did that to the high elf king (Gilgalad?) that you barely got to see. What he did was pick him up and burn him alive with heat and fire from his body in front of everybody. He wanted to do the same thing to Isildur. You breifly see Gilgalad at 2:35, but it doesnt show how sauron killed him. (burned him alive) He was one of the first people sauron killed. He was going straight for the leaders.
