Tank locomotives came in two types...side-tank ( water tanks on the sides of the boiler), and saddle tank. This locomotive is a saddle-tank, and carries its water supply in a tank that straddles the boiler, like a saddle ( hence the name). The fuel supply ( coal, wood, or oil) is carried in a bunker behind the cab. Tank locomotives were devised as a compact way to switch cars or haul short trains over a short distance ( distance was limited due to the limited fuel supply).
