Americans were originally British. Two hundred years ago, we all sounded British. Over time we developed our own accent, but in Sylvia Plath's time, we were still in the process of metamorphosis.

Has there been any subject less deserving of such literary abuse than poor Otto Plath? It seems that this incredible self-pity and almost inexplicable rage is what lead to Sylvia's suicide. If she can be this angry with a man whose only crime was to "abandon" her by dying when she was 8 years old, then it is somewhat comprehensible that she would kill herself in response to her husband's adultery. |
