So the meaning is unknown, but obviously he wrote, and it has a meaning and that's what i love, always makes me smile... :) And don't think it's sad, but wonderful that sad things can make such beautiful things? I love how it starts off sad and blooms into something much more happy and encouraging. It makes me feel as if it's one of those "I can do anything" days or "I can get through this", you know it cheers you up.

This reminds of so much, it's so sad.. [the beginning] dredging up everything, but the song, it so beautiful!

This is one of those songs I used to like when it first came out. Listening to it know I'm like WTF? Average song... I like their calling all angels better than this.

Um, yes, he does have a daughter. She didn't die though like that person a few comments down said. I know this for sure. I live in Erie, PA (general area Pat is from) and his ex wife, Geanne Rapp, was one of my teacher's a year back. He has a son and a daughter. They used to take music lessons at World of Music in Erie too, if that's any more proof, haha.

this is about the death of his mother. my stepdad met them, and he said the opening lines came to him in a dream after his mother had died. the person below me is exactly right. HE HAS NO DAUGHTER! just to clear things up. but besides that, this is a beautiful song, i love listening to it when its raining. i dont know why, its just real peaceful.

Due to its unique and enigmatic lyrics, the meaning of song has been the subject of speculation since its release.[citation needed] Lead singer Pat Monahan has stated that the song was inspired by the death of his mother, and that the opening lines came to him in a dream. The song, which started as a song about his mother, has evolved into a love song, according to Monahan in 2006. from wikipedia
