What you do is after the behavior pretty well trained, you start varying your 'reward schedule'...say, after three successes, you click and treat...you start making the dog guess if he will get a treat. If you stop giving a reward all together and too soon, the dog won't have a real reason to keep doing the command. (But yes, if you click, you must always treat.)

you can also give something they like (such as a favourtie toy), pet, or you can be verbal 'good girl'. as already stated, this is a reinforcer (encourages behaviour to be repeated). its like promising a reward when you click.

if they can hear it. its fine, some dogs are more sensitive to sound than others. so somelike it louder, some like it quieter. try it out first, see if he hears it

the method you'd be lookin for here is called 'extinction'. search it if you want to know what it is. clicker training might work, aslong as there is a reward to go along with it. does the dog respond when you tell him to be quiet? find a way to get him if not such as scolding (this is equivelant to telling him to sit) and click and reward. then once he learns the behaviour, match it with a word such as 'stop'. if you dont get what i mean. mail me. im running out of characters.

Is clicker training effective for correcting unwanted behaviours, such as keeping my dog from chasing my cats?

use a gatorade cap... its alluminium just like the clicker, makes the same sound and its cheaper ;-)
